    Nanoscale gold pillars strengthened through dislocation starvation

    It has been known for more than half a century that crystals can be made stronger by introducing defects into them, i.e., by strain-hardening. As the number of defects increases, their movement and multiplication is impeded, thus strengthening the material. In the present work we show hardening by dislocation starvation, a fundamentally different strengthening mechanism based on the elimination of defects from the crystal. We demonstrate that submicrometer sized gold crystals can be 50 times stronger than their bulk counterparts due to the elimination of defects from the crystal in the course of deformation

    This research examines the potential basis behavior and hedging effectiveness for the Minneapolis Grain Exchange's (MGE) cash settled corn contract. MGE futures cash settle to the National Corn Index (NCI) calculated by Data Transmission Network (DTN). Focusing on seven regions in Illinois, the data suggest that NCI Futures offer potential advantages over the existing Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) corn futures. In particular, nearby basis variability could be reduced by nearly one-half from 8.8 cents per bushel to 4.5 cents per bushel, and hedging effectiveness may increase from an average of 80% for the CBOT to 93% for the NCI.Crop Production/Industries, Marketing,

    Formation and Equilibrium Properties of Living Polymer Brushes

    Polydisperse brushes obtained by reversible radical chain polymerization reaction onto a solid substrate with surface-attached initiators, are studied by means of an off-lattice Monte Carlo algorithm of living polymers (LP). Various properties of such brushes, like the average chain length and the conformational orientation of the polymers, or the force exerted by the brush on the opposite container wall, reveal power-law dependence on the relevant parameters. The observed molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the grafted LP decays much more slowly than the corresponding LP bulk system due to the gradient of the monomer density within the dense pseudo-brush which favors longer chains. Both MWD and the density profiles of grafted polymers and chain ends are well fitted by effective power laws whereby the different exponents turn out to be mutually self-consistent for a pseudo-brush in the strong-stretching regime.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figues, J.Chem.     A Disaggregated Analysis of Beef Import Demand in Japan

    Japan is an important partner for the U.S. beef industry and a major beef importing country. In 2020, Japan was the world’s third-largest importer of beef products (USDA, 2021). Although the Japanese beef market has been studied, research on the importance of product characteristics in determining import demand has been limited. The goal of this research is to provide a detailed analysis of how U.S. beef products compete in the Japanese market relative to other exporting countries based on prices, product form (chilled versus frozen), and product characteristics (boneless versus bone-in). This study will focus on three key factors affecting beef import demand in the Japanese market. The first factor is the importance of country of origin, the second is the importance of product form in determining demand, and the third is whether the imported product is boneless versus bone-in. These three factors will be examined all together using the generalized dynamic Rotterdam model developed by Bushehri (2003). STATA will be used to estimate the model. Estimates are used to examine the effects of recent trade agreements and tariff policy at the detailed product level and to project U.S. exports to Japan moving forward

    Summary of directional divergence characteristics of several high performance aircraft configurations

    The present paper summarizes the high-angle-of-attack characteristics of a number of high-performance aircraft as determined from model force tests and free-flight model tests and correlates these characteristics with the dynamic directional-stability parameter. This correlation shows that the dynamic directional-stability parameter correlates fairly well with directional divergence. Data are also presented to show the effect of some airframe modifications on the directional divergence potential of the configuration. These results show that leading-edge slates seem to be the most effective airframe modification for reducing or eliminating the directional divergence potential of aircraft with moderately swept wings
